Preparing for College – Program for High School Seniors and Parents

Dave's Pizza 1819 29th Ave S, Homewood, United States

As our high school seniors prepare for college, it is more important than ever to be prepared for the issues they may face as Jewish students. Since October 7th, Jewish students are experiencing an unprecedented wave of antisemitism. A survey of Jewish college students by the ADL reports that 73% have experienced or witnessed some form of antisemitism since the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year. Prior to this school year, 70% of Jewish college students experienced at least some form of antisemitism throughout their entire college experience. Parents and students are invited to join the BJF’s Jewish Community Relations Council for a special program to talk about the issues we are seeing on campus, what students may encounter and strategies and resources to utilize if they do.

Temple Beth-El 2179 Highland Avenue, Birmingham, AL, United States

The J — in partnership with Temple Beth-El, Temple Emanu-El, and the Jewish Community Relations Council — is offering a unique opportunity to see Heschel’s Passover Eve, a solo performance that takes an intimate “behind-the-scenes” look at a special seder hosted by Rabbi Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel and to which he has invited his friend and traveling companion Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The play begins in April 1968. As Rabbi Heschel arranges the chairs around the seder table, we watch him rehearse for the coming event. His preparations give the audience an intimate look at Heschel’s complex, fascinating, and even tumultuous character. Yizhar Hess, the vice chair of the World Zionist Organization who commissioned the play, will be in attendance.
