In this virtual webinar sponsored by the Alabama Holocaust Education Center, panelists Ali Massoud, an Egyptian-born Muslim, and Leah Nelson, a Jewish-American, share their journey of overcoming the silence and fear wrought by October 7th to restore their friendship. Moderated by two-time Pulitzer-prize winning journalist John Archibald, who covered their story for AL.com, this panel will discuss how courage and radical empathy can heal political divides. Join our conversation to learn how people from “different places, different faiths, different ethnicities and mythologies” can spark hard conversations to reconcile our differences. Join us for a special screening of “Rescue in The Philippines," a one-hour documentary of a real-file Casablanca, full of intrigue, unlikely heroes, and a perilous humanitarian mission to save Jews from persecution half a world away. The screening will be followed by an online conversation with Holocaust Survivor Ralph Preiss, who fled to the Philippines with his family. The second-to-last film in our 11th Annual Holocaust in Film Series, this screening and discussion will be moderated by UAB Prof. Michele Forman. Rescue in the Philippines documents a high-profile group of cigar-smoking poker buddies, including Colonel Dwight Eisenhower, devising an intricate plan to successfully rescue up to 1,300 Jews from the Nazis. This gripping story is told through interviews with historians and relatives of the key players. First-person accounts from survivors detail their harrowing escape from Europe and immigration to the Philippines. The 2024 Holocaust in Film Series is presented by Perlman Charitable Fund.
