Holocaust in Film Series 2024: Film #4, “One Life”
Sidewalk Films 1821 2nd Ave N, Birmingham, AL, United StatesJoin the Alabama Holocaust Education Center for the last film in our 11th Annual Holocaust in Film Series. This special advance screening will followed by a conversation with one of Sir Nicholas Winton's relatives and a second-generation Survivor he saved. Join us for this exclusive event and discussion, moderated by UAB Prof. Michele Forman. Starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, One Life tells the story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London stock broker, who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky (Sir Anthony Hopkins) lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. Civil Rights Experience Shabbat w/ Miles College Golden Voices Choir
Temple Beth-El 2179 Highland Avenue, Birmingham, AL, United StatesCelebrate the spirit of the Beth El Civil Rights Experience! Join us Friday, March 15, at 4:30 p.m. for a musical Kabbalat Shabbat service featuring the Miles College Golden Voices, a choir that exudes culture, class and civility through music. The Golden Voices have performed at high-profile events across the nation, and we are delighted to welcome them to TBE! We’ll kick off with a musical workshop led by members of the choir, which will include reflections from students on their roles in the choir, as well as an interactive singing exercise. Workshop will be followed by our regular Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat service that begins at 5:45 p.m. After the service, we invite you to a chicken pot pie dinner. Registration is required for dinner and seats are limited. Register here. The choir will be joining us for dinner, as well as two out-of-state groups visiting us as part of the Beth El Civil Rights Experience. The celebration continues at our Saturday morning Shabbat services, beginning at 9:30 a.m., during which we will honor donors, docents, committee members and others who have brought the Civil Rights Experience to life.
