How do we manage times of hardship and fully embrace moments of joy—not alone, but in community? What does Jewish wisdom offer in terms of how we can truly show up for each other? Rabbi Sharon Brous grapples with these questions and more in her book The Amen Effect: Ancient Wisdom to Mend Our Broken Hearts and World. This monthly alternative service is called Kehillah, or community, and will include stories and practices based on this book, along with songs and silent reflections. Reading the book is not required, and you're welcome to come to one or all nine sessions throughout the course of the year. Of course, reading the book will add richness to your experience, if you feel so moved. A copy of the book is available for browsing in the Reading Room at Beth-El. Sharron Mendel Swain was raised in an interfaith family long before that was the norm, and has been a mindfulness practitioner her entire adult life. A few FAQs: Q: What is the relationship of The Amen Effect, by Rabbi Sharon Brous, to these sessions? A: It is the inspiration for this 10-session series of alternative services focused on cultivating a deeper sense of […]

Grandparents are key bridges between Jewish identity and grandchildren—especially those being raised by one Jewish parent, whether single or intermarried. Lessons from the National Jewish Grandparents Study and intergenerational best practices will be discussed. Dr. Keren R. McGinity is the inaugural Interfaith Specialist at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and a renowned author. She is also a research associate at the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute at Brandeis University where she taught American Studies. Prior to joining USCJ, Dr. McGinity was the founding director of the Interfaith Families Jewish Engagement graduate program at Hebrew College. Her pioneering books, Still Jewish: A History of Women & Intermarriage in America (NYU Press 2009), a National Jewish Book Award Finalist, and Marrying Out: Jewish Men, Intermarriage & Fatherhood (Indiana Univ. Press 2014), provided groundbreaking analyses about Jewish continuity by focusing on gender and change over time. The title of her new book is “#UsToo: How Jewish, Muslim, & Christian Women Changed Our Communities” (Routledge, under contract). She is a Forward 50 honoree for her clarion call for a Jewish response to the #MeToo Movement.

Join the Alabama Holocaust Education Center for the last film in our 11th Annual Holocaust in Film Series. This special advance screening will followed by a conversation with one of Sir Nicholas Winton's relatives and a second-generation Survivor he saved. Join us for this exclusive event and discussion, moderated by UAB Prof. Michele Forman. Starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, One Life tells the story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London stock broker, who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky (Sir Anthony Hopkins) lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show, ‘That’s Life!’, surprises him by introducing him to some […]
