  • AHEC Holocaust in Film Series: My Name is Sara

    The AHEC invites you to join us for the opening screening of our 13th annual Holocaust in Film Series: Rescue, Escape, and Liberation, sponsored by the Perlman Donor Advised Fund. On February 3rd at Sidewalk Film Center & Cinema, we will screen “My Name is Sara,” a stunning drama based on the true-life story of thirteen-year-old  Sara Góralnik. After escaping the Jewish Ghetto in Poland and losing her family, Sara hides in plain sight by passing as an Orthodox Christian in the Ukrainian countryside. There, she is taken in by a farmer and his young wife, but she soon discovers the dark secrets of her employers’ marriage, compounding the greatest secret she must strive to protect: her true identity. Following the screening, the filmmaker Steven Oritt will join us via Zoom for an exclusive Q&A.  Tickets are $10 per person. Buy your tickets today!

    The largest section of the TaNaKh, our most central Jewish text, is Nevi’im, the Prophets. In the numerous books of this section, we encounter the prophets of our tradition. The prophets in this text are passionate and moral people who desperately want to pass the word of God onto the Israelite people. The task of these figures is to be a compelling microphone of God, and help the chosen people find the best way to live according to God’s laws. Each prophet strives to make the world a better place. In the course, we will dive deeply into the Prophets, learning how to apply the text to our modern lives as well as examining the text itself through a lens on the Hebrew and commentary.

Through 3 powerful, Alabama-centered documentaries, we'll look at how water, land, and living ecosystems sustain communities and how they are being challenged in this moment. After the short documentaries, Alabama Rivers Alliance will lead a talk back. About the films: Hyperscaled exposes the hidden environmental and community costs of rapidly expanding data centers and AI infrastructure, focusing on the strain on water and energy resources in the Southeast. The River's Gift offers a quieter, healing story of veterans finding connection and restoration through the Tallapoosa River and the natural community it sustains. Salabama invites us underground into the fascinating world of Alabama's salamanders, revealing the beauty and fragility of often-overlooked ecosystems. SOUTHERN EXPOSURE is a film fellowship program actively raising awareness about Alabama's incredible natural resources and important environmental issues that impact all of us.
