Join the Alabama Holocaust Education Center for the last film in our 11th Annual Holocaust in Film Series. This special advance screening will followed by a conversation with one of Sir Nicholas Winton's relatives and a second-generation Survivor he saved. Join us for this exclusive event and discussion, moderated by UAB Prof. Michele Forman. Starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, One Life tells the story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London stock broker, who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky (Sir Anthony Hopkins) lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. Holocaust in Film Series 2024: Film #3, “Rescue in the Philippines: Refuge from the Holocaust”

Join us for a special screening of “Rescue in The Philippines," a one-hour documentary of a real-file Casablanca, full of intrigue, unlikely heroes, and a perilous humanitarian mission to save Jews from persecution half a world away. The screening will be followed by an online conversation with Holocaust Survivor Ralph Preiss, who fled to the Philippines with his family. The second-to-last film in our 11th Annual Holocaust in Film Series, this screening and discussion will be moderated by UAB Prof. Michele Forman. Rescue in the Philippines documents a high-profile group of cigar-smoking poker buddies, including Colonel Dwight Eisenhower, devising an intricate plan to successfully rescue up to 1,300 Jews from the Nazis. This gripping story is told through interviews with historians and relatives of the key players. First-person accounts from survivors detail their harrowing escape from Europe and immigration to the Philippines. The 2024 Holocaust in Film Series is presented by Perlman Charitable Fund.
