The AHEC invites you to join us for the final screening of our 13th annual Holocaust in Film Series: Rescue, Escape, and Liberation, sponsored by the Perlman Donor Advised Fund. On March 31 at Sidewalk Film Center & Cinema, we will screen the emotional and thought-provoking film “Everything is Illuminated." The film follows Jonathan, whose grandfather was a Holocaust survivor, as he struggles to uncover his family’s history and learn the lessons this history has to teach him. As Jonathan’s journey unfolds, the story asks what escape or liberation truly means to those who survived the Holocaust yet remain haunted by memories of their trauma and immense losses. Following the screening, Michele Forman—a second-generation Survivor, award-winning documentarian, and UAB media studies professor—will lead a discussion about the film to deepen audience understanding of the struggles survivors and the descendants of survivors continue to face, as well as how we can work together to build a better and brighter future. Tickets are $10 per person. Purchase your tickets today!

In 1993, Chico Bomchel (of blessed memory) began serving meals to those in need at Grace Episcopal in Woodlawn. Chico himself had been a recipient of those meals, and when he was able to provide for others, he did so for many years. Eva Wilensky worked alongside Chico for many of those years, helping to organize the collection of food from local stores and leading volunteers from the Jewish community in cooking and serving them on Easter and Christmas. Eventually, Debby Thomas (of blessed memory) took over this effort and led it for many years. During the global pandemic and since, volunteers from Temple Beth-El and Temple Emanu-El have partnered with The Fish Market/Yellow Bicycle Catering, Omni Foods, Bud’s Best Cookies, Milo’s Tea and other local businesses that have helped us provide these meals through gifts in kind or significant discounts. To continue the tradition serving our neighbors observing Easter, join volunteers from Temples Emanu-El & Temple Beth-El and CJFS for Easter lunch and at First Light Shelter, a homelessness stable emergency shelter. Thanks to Temple Emanu-El Feeding the Hungry Fund (formerly Community Kitchens), the Temple Beth-El Chico Bomchel Food Insecurity Fund, and the Edward & Hermione Friend Community Fund of the Grafman Endowment Fund for supporting […]

3 events,"See how food goes from donation to delivery by helping us sort and inspect donated food items, prepare the sorted product for our agency partners, and assemble food boxes for our programs." -Community Foodbank of Central Alabama Join CJFS volunteers every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 9-11am to help close the meal gap. "Over 246,000 of our neighbors and 68,000 children in central Alabama live in homes without access to adequate food (2023 numbers). That’s 1 in 5 children and 1 in 6 people who experience hunger regularly. Additionally, many children fall within the meal gap – they do not qualify for federal nutrition aid (SNAP), and they would fall through the cracks without help from the Community Food Bank."-https://feedingal.org/find-food-near-you/ CJFS and the Jewish community are ready to step it up and show our support to the foodbank and our neighbors who face food insecurity. Please contact caleigh@cjfsbham.org with interest and questions.

Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a solemn day of reflection observed each spring to honor the memory of the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution. The date follows the Hebrew calendar and marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and symbolizing Jewish resistance in the face of annihilation. Each year, the Alabama Holocaust Education Center commemorates Yom HaShoah with a powerful public program that centers on personal testimony. The event always includes descendants of Alabama Holocaust Survivors who share deeply moving stories that preserve memory and inspire future generations. These first-person narratives offer a rare and intimate window into the lived experiences of courage, survival, and loss. Stories of liberation, resistance and rescue are also featured. Through music, historical reflection, and storytelling, AHEC’s Yom HaShoah Commemoration brings our community together to remember, to educate, and to affirm our shared responsibility to stand against antisemitism, hatred, and indifference in all its forms.
