Please join the Birmingham Jewish Federation and our entire community in celebrating Israel at 75. As the state of Israel approaches its 75th anniversary, the Birmingham Jewish Federation is kicking off a yearlong celebration of events.

We look forward to celebrating Israel through educational opportunities, music, dance, food, and an exciting opportunity to travel to Israel in October.  We will celebrate the important bond between American and Israeli Jews while creating deep interpersonal relationships that transcend location, as well as acknowledge our differences and the heritage that unites us all.

Please join the Birmingham Jewish Federation and our entire community in celebrating Israel at 75. As the state of Israel approaches its 75th anniversary, the Birmingham Jewish Federation is kicking off a yearlong celebration of events. The festivities will begin with a Yom Ha’atzmaut, Blue & White party on Wednesday, April 26th, 2023, 5:00-7:00 pm at the N.E. Miles Jewish Day School. It will be followed by the Levite Jewish Community Center’s Annual Jewish Food and Culture Fest on Sunday, April 30th from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.

The Jewish Food and Culture Fest is one of B’ham’s favorite outdoor food events. In fact, last year’s event was declared “the best one-day event the Jewish community has put on in Birmingham. Ever.” Plan now to attend… but be patient because it will take us weeks to prepare all of your favorite foods from recipes that have been passed down for generations: brisket, falafel, corned beef, matzah ball soup, and mandelbrot (to name just a few).

During the Food Festival we’ll also celebrate the 75th Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day). As part of the celebration, a new addition to this year’s event will be a recreation of an open-air Israeli shuk, or market.

Then when we’re ready, all you have to do is show up, eat, and enjoy.

The J is excited to begin offering youth Krav Maga lessons on March 20. The Israeli martial arts program for ages 8-12 will strive to build character while teaching defensive and offensive techniques.

Originally developed by a Hungarian Jew named Imi Lichtenfeld in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s to help Jews defend themselves against fascist agitators, Krav Maga was later adopted and developed further by the Israel Defense Forces. The program started showing up in the United States in the 1980s.
