The LJCC is excited to welcome author Shayna Kaufmann to speak about her new book Embrace the Middle: A Woman’s Guide to Mindfully Navigating the Challenges, Celebrating the Joys, and Finding Power in Midlife. Shayna will be discussing the insights of her book as well as selling and signing copies. The event will include wine and snacks.

4th, 5th, & 6th Grade Hebrew School As students begin 4th grade, we teach Hebrew through prayer. We focus on strengthening their decoding skills (mainly in 4th grade), Hebrew vocabulary within the prayers, and the themes, concepts, and meaning of different prayers during Tefillah on Sundays and Wednesdays. Our goal is to help develop our students’ capability to participate in Jewish prayer services. In 5th and 6th grade, students begin mastering the Erev Shabbat (Friday evening) and Shabbat morning prayers that they will chant for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah services.

Kehillah Service: The Amen Effect led by Sharron Swain
How do we manage times of hardship and fully embrace moments of joy—not alone, but in community? What does Jewish wisdom offer in terms of how we can truly show up for each other? Rabbi Sharon Brous grapples with these questions and more in her book The Amen Effect: Ancient Wisdom to Mend Our Broken Hearts and World. This monthly alternative service is called Kehillah, or community, and will include stories and practices based on this book, along with songs and silent reflections. Reading the book is not required, and you're welcome to come to one or all nine sessions throughout the course of the year. Of course, reading the book will add richness to your experience, if you feel so moved. A copy of the book is available for browsing in the Reading Room at Beth-El. Sharron Mendel Swain was raised in an interfaith family long before that was the norm, and has been a mindfulness practitioner her entire adult life. 2024 Kristallnacht Commemorative Lecture: Profits and Persecution with Dr. Peter Hayes
Join celebrated Holocaust scholar Peter Hayes for the AHEC’s annual Kristallnacht Commemorative Lecture. Hosted in partnership with the UAB Department of History, this lecture will provide an exclusive preview of Hayes’ upcoming book, Profits and Persecution: German Big Business in the Nazi Economy and the Holocaust. Were German businesses Nazi collaborators, or were they just doing business with the Nazis? Hayes will explore how German businesses during the Nazi regime became involved with and vital to the Nazi persecution, exploitation, and murder of the Jewish people. He will reveal how the Nazi regime used a corrupting combination of intimidation and temptation to win the support of the German corporate world and earn their participation in what he terms “the normalization of barbarism.” Shockingly, few of these businessmen were ever brought to justice for their actions, and Hayes will unravel the mystery of why and how these individuals escaped prosecution. The event will be held at UAB’s Hulsey Auditorium on November 7th with a reception at 5:30pm. The lecture will then promptly begin at 6:00pm. Join us to learn more about how ordinary German businesses became Nazi collaborators and enjoy a sneak peek of Hayes’ new book!

Join Times of Israel political correspondent Sam Sokol to discuss how Israel is managing a year into its most brutal war in decades. While tens of thousands of Israelis remain displaced and more young men die in combat in Gaza and Lebanon, Israelis have turned on each other, fighting political battles over hostage deals, ultra-Orthodox enlistment and the morality of war. Senior Grocery Initiative unload and pack groceries with CJFS volunteers
CJFS needs YOU to ensure that we can continue to provide home-delivery groceries every month to our low-income SGI clients. SGI client Peggy sends her gratitude, "May Gd bless you for volunteering your time to deliver our food boxes. This is a big help to those of us on fixed incomes. Thank you and may Gd bless you!" Please help unload more than 70 30-lb boxes of groceries and pack them for the Sunday delivery teams. The project typically takes 60-90 minutes, depending on how many volunteers show up!
