This spring, the American Red Cross experienced a severe blood shortage that had not been seen in the past 10 years and UAB alone canceled 600 surgeries. As the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise – and deplete the nation’s blood inventory we are concerned about the start of the summer and keeping blood on the shelves. So many people are working around the clock to meet the extraordinary blood needs of hospitals and patients but can’t do it alone.
